Don't get hit with a lawsuit!
A majority of {B/qKC}'s materials are protected by third party rights or licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 (Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International).
"We, as a Black gay community, we need a place where we can say, hey, this is ours. This is us."
This means:
- You are allowed to share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format.
- The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.
Under the following terms:
- Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
- NonCommercial — You may not use the material for commercial purposes. Noncommercial means not primarily intended for or directed towards commercial advantage or monetary compensation.
- NoDerivatives — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you may not distribute the modified material.
Our co-operative licensing model
{B/qKC}'s collections come from a cooperative licensing model built with the Black queer elders, culture bearers, and community members who hold copyright over their personal materials.
Each collection holder signs a Materials License with {B/qKC} that gives us permission to digitize, describe, and share their materials for educational and charitable purposes–while they keep their copyright, their original materials, and say over how they're credited.
Because of this, the materials in our licensed collections are shared under terms consistent with CC BY-NC-ND 4.0: you're welcome to share and redistribute them with attribution, but only for noncommercial purposes and without altering them. Original writing, research, and design created by {B/qKC} itself–including our Read essays–is licensed under CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 directly.

YOU are responsible for obtaining necessary permissions.
{B/qKC}'s collections contain a wide range of content. You are responsible for clearing the necessary rights in order to use the materials in question. For example, if you want to download a photo that is still protected by copyright for use in a research paper, you must determine whether your proposed use requires consent from the copyright holder, and, if so, you must secure the permission of the copyright holder. In some cases, you may also need to secure the consent of people who appear in photographs in our collections.
Takedown and removal requests
{B/qKC} wants the people and communities represented in this archive to feel respected, not exposed. This applies whether you're a copyright holder, a collection contributor, or simply someone who appears in a photograph, recording, or story here.
If you have questions or concerns about how something is presented–or you'd like a piece removed, cropped, recaptioned, or handled differently–please email us at bqkc@1800nasi.net and include a link to the material in question. We'll do our best to honor your request and will work with you directly. This archive only works because of the trust of the people in it.
